Nicholas Brendon, the American actor known for playing Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Kevin Lynch in Criminal Minds, passed away this Friday from natural causes at the age of 54, as his family announced in a statement on social media. "With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He died peacefully in his sleep from natural causes," the text published on the artist's own account on X stated.
It went on to add: "Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years, Nicky found his passion in painting and art. He loved to share his talent enthusiastically with his family, friends, and admirers.
" "He was passionate, sensitive, and had an inexhaustible motivation to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was," the statement detailed. It then requested "privacy during this time of mourning and to celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart," and concluded by thanking "everyone who has offered their love and support.
" As Variety detailed, Brendon gained notoriety and won the public's affection by embodying Xander, one of Buffy Summers' (Sarah Michelle Gellar) best friends, who provided sarcastic commentary while they fought against the forces of darkness throughout the seven seasons of the series that debuted in 1997. Thanks to the fame he achieved with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the actor, born on April 12, 1971, in Los Angeles, California, landed roles in films such as Demon Island, Coherence, and Bizarre Summer, an adaptation of Charles Busch's play Psycho Beach Party, where he acted alongside Amy Adams and Lauren Ambrose. Among his other well-known television work is his participation in 21 episodes of the series Criminal Minds, portraying the ex-hacker Kevin Lynch, and the sitcom Kitchen Confidential, which brought to the screen the chef Anthony Bourdain's memoirs of the same name.
In this last project, which lasted only one season, Brendon worked alongside Bradley Cooper. After the end of Buffy in 2003, Brendon began to experience addiction and mental health issues, announcing at a fan convention in 2004 that he would enter a rehabilitation center to treat his alcoholism. He was arrested several times and, since 2010, faced charges that included felony vandalism, resisting arrest, property damage, and serious bodily injury to his spouse.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, this last charge was resolved with a plea agreement that included three years of probation. According to Variety, Brendon was an occasional social media user and posted periodic updates on Facebook and Instagram about his life and health, as well as sharing some of his paintings. In 2023, he posted on Instagram that he had undergone two spinal surgeries and that a year earlier he had suffered a heart attack and had been diagnosed with congenital heart disease.
