With the aim of making transparent the progress of a project that originates from the community and self-management, the Diálogos Australes: Oral History Archive of Punta Arenas formally presented its Management Report and Balance for 2025. The document details the institutional cultivation process that has prepared the ground for what will be the first oral testimony archive with international standards in the region. In a conversation with Radio Polar, its Director, Gastón Cárcamo Vargas, emphasized that this balance serves as an invitation to the community to understand how collective memory is constructed.
Establishing this first archive requires solid foundations. The year 2025 was dedicated to preparing the methodology and alliances, so that in 2026 we can begin the gradual collection of the stories that bring Punta Arenas and Magallanes to life. A growing memory ecosystem.
Cárcamo also positively acknowledged the emergence of other initiatives focused on the intangible cultural heritage centered on orality in the area: It is very favorable that new local projects are being considered in Magallanes; this confirms that the interest in our identity is more alive than ever and motivates us to continue collaborating to raise the standards of oral history throughout the region. World-Class Support. The work of Diálogos Australes not only has a strong local connection but also enjoys the backing of prestigious institutions, such as the Institute of History of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (PUC) —through a collaboration protocol— and an official invitation from Alessandro Portelli, a world reference in the discipline, for an internship in Rome during the second semester of this year.
Upcoming Agenda: National Network and Dialogue with Ushuaia. The presentation of this balance coincides with an intense management agenda. On Monday afternoon, Cárcamo will meet with Dr.
Nancy Nicholls (PUC) to coordinate the reactivation of the National Oral History Network. Additionally, the First Binational Oral History Conference of Patagonia is planned alongside specialists from Ushuaia, Argentina, strengthening the common identity of the southernmost region.
