The Audio case and the Belarusian plot are among the most recent issues that have called into question the proper exercise of the legal profession, due to the alleged crimes and unethical actions involving both lawyers and judges in the Republic. With ongoing criminal cases, professionals and magistrates in preventive detention — or under various precautionary measures — Justice Minister Fernando Rabat stated this week before the Senate Constitution Committee that, as part of the constitutional reform project that modifies the Judicial Government and creates the Judicial Appointments Council, they will seek to introduce a series of measures aimed at strengthening the sanctions system for legal professionals, whether or not they are members of a bar association. In this regard, the ministry will propose modifications such as having complaints against the ethical conduct of lawyers addressed by ordinary courts in brief and summary proceedings.
