The Los Lagos Prosecutor's Office announced the discovery of human remains in a wooded area about 50 meters from the property of Julia Chuñil, a Mapuche leader allegedly murdered by her son, Javier Troncoso, with the complicity of her siblings, Jeannette Troncoso and Pablo San Martín. The fact was confirmed in the Los Lagos Guarantee Court by regional prosecutor Tatiana Esquivel during a hearing to review the precautionary measures for the accused. During this session, the Prosecutor's Office responded to the defense's arguments seeking to overturn the preventive detention of Javier Troncoso and the total house arrest of Pablo San Martín and Jeannette Troncoso, who are charged with parricide, illegal burial, attempted robbery with violence and intimidation, significant mistreatment, and degrading treatment.
"On January 16, 2026, the second day of the search, a bag was found buried with more than 60 bone fragments just a few meters from her house. These were subjected to scientific analysis, and the recently received report indicates that among the first remains analyzed, one corresponds to human origin," she stated. "The analyzed bone sample shows a 100 percent match with human DNA.
This means that all the genetic material detected in that sample belongs to humans, with no significant mixing with other species," Esquivel explained. Additionally, the prosecutor revealed that this remains—along with other evidence—are in the process of identification. As of now, the hearing is still ongoing, and the Prosecutor's Office may present new evidence.
