The Santa Inés Church is one of the oldest in the city and continues to mark the pace of La Serena with its history, serving as an invaluable contribution to the community. Although it is currently a cultural center filled with activities, it still retains a sacred atmosphere upon entering. The church was built in 1678 on the site of a previous hermitage.
That building was destroyed in a fire following the attack by Bartolomé Sharp in 1680. It was reconstructed in adobe, but the earthquake of 1730 destroyed it. The definitive temple was built in 1819, and its structure was renewed in 1840.
By 1870, its lateral bell tower was replaced with a central double-drum tower, and two pilasters were added on each side of the portal, giving it a neoclassical character. The earthquake of 1975 left it with serious structural damage, leading to its closure to the public, and it was deconsecrated in 1983. However, in 2010, it was restored as part of the Heritage Enhancement Program, using the original adobe treated with modern techniques and recovering the colors it had in 1870: white for the interior and red for the exterior.
