Jorge Alessandri (UDI), president of the Chamber of Deputies, emphasized that the most important factor is the viability of the votes, and he does not believe that former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet is the best option for the United Nations (UN). In this regard, the parliamentarian from the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) suggested that "the first question to ask Secretary of State Marco Rubio is whether they will veto that candidacy, and if so, to see if there is political viability. " Alessandri made these statements during an event of the Chilean Air Force (FACH) when asked about the meeting held on March 20 between President José Antonio Kast and former president Michelle Bachelet at La Moneda.
He underscored the importance of safeguarding the figure of former presidents in Chile. "They are an institution that must be protected; whenever a former president requests an appointment or meeting with the elected president, they should always have the doors of the Government open," he explained. The parliamentary authority also added that "another thing is that we do not believe she is the best person to lead the United Nations.
" Alessandri's stance aligns with his party's call on the matter, as the UDI extended an appeal to the ruling party to support the opposition to Bachelet's candidacy for the UN. On this occasion, the party described the candidacy as lacking consensus and stated that it would not have public support from countries that make up the UN Security Council, which indeed have veto power.
