The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) is making progress in seeking structural solutions to improve road connectivity in the La Serena-Coquimbo conurbation, a problem that has intensified with the urban growth of both municipalities. In this regard, the Undersecretary of Public Works, Nicolás Balmaceda, who visited the region this Friday, assured that there is clarity regarding the need to implement long-term measures to address mobility challenges in the area. “We are clear that the La Serena and Coquimbo conurbation requires long-term solutions,” stated the official.

In this context, Balmaceda explained that the Technical Concessions Panel recently issued a statement — on February 20 — regarding the current project, which activated a 120-day period for the MOP to present concrete proposals. Currently, the ministry is working on various alternatives, including updating demand studies to determine the best way to execute the initiative. Among the options under evaluation is the possibility of modifying the existing concession contract with the current managing company or advancing a new concession to address the connectivity needs of the area.

“It will be the technical teams who determine the best way to carry out the project,” indicated the undersecretary. He also emphasized that this process is being developed in coordination with regional authorities, who have conveyed the concerns of residents regarding congestion and connectivity issues. Furthermore, Balmaceda expressed confidence that the ongoing work will lead to an appropriate solution to improve the road network in the conurbation.
