Since the launch in 2017 of the plan to develop the New Area of Xiong’an in Hebei Province, northern China, the so-called city of the future has been taking shape. Xiong’an will assume non-essential functions for Beijing's role as the capital of the country and will contribute to the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The area has attracted investments exceeding 1 trillion yuan, about 145 billion US dollars.

The urbanized area spans approximately 215 square kilometers, and more than 5,300 buildings have already been constructed. The development of the New Area of Xiong’an has also attracted international attention. “Xiong’an is, for me, a laboratory where China tests large-scale ecological, low-carbon, and smart solutions.

We really want to cooperate with Xiong’an,” said Pierre Mirochnikoff, vice president of the Benelux Chamber of Commerce. “It’s my first time in Xiong’an, and I must say that when I observe the city, I see that it was planned with the future in mind. For me, this city represents what it means to think ahead, not just for the next two years, but really for the medium and long term,” said Michaela Gradener, director of Research and Development at Eco Planet Green Operations GmbH.

“The Xiong’an district is an example of the modern face of China, incorporating smart technology and smart neighborhoods. This is something we also view with optimism, as it can bring more success stories to the rest of the world,” indicated Hussam Husseini, Jordan's ambassador to China. Since China announced its plans to establish the New Area of Xiong’an in April 2017, it has evolved from a project into a vibrant city.

The development of the New Area of Xiong’an, dubbed China’s “city of the future,” has entered a phase where equal importance must be given to its large-scale construction and its purpose of relieving Beijing of non-essential functions for its role as the national capital. Xiong’an was designed to be a smart, livable, innovative, and green city, free from “urban diseases. ” The establishment of the New Area of Xiong’an has been a measure aimed at addressing the challenges faced by modern urban development, exploring an optimal development model for densely populated and economically intensive areas, and promoting the construction of high-level modern cities.
