The President of the Republic, José Antonio Kast, participated this Saturday in the funeral of second sergeant Javier Figueroa Manquemilla in Puerto Montt, where he delivered an emotional speech calling for support for the Carabineros de Chile. During the ceremony, the President began by thanking the presence of civil, religious, and police authorities, highlighting the inclusive nature of the tribute. “Today, the entire nation is called together in a moment of pain, but the whole nation is represented here,” he stated, emphasizing the attendance of representatives from the Public Ministry, the police, and local and national authorities.
In his speech, Kast also emphasized the symbolic context surrounding the life and death of the police officer, linking significant personal and institutional dates. He recalled that the attack that left Figueroa seriously injured occurred on the same day he assumed the presidency, which—he noted—“unites us in pain today, but keeps us united moving forward. ” The head of state also highlighted the role of the sergeant's family, particularly mentioning his mother, wife, and son, to whom he addressed direct words: “You have lost your dad, but you have gained a nation that will accompany you,” he expressed, underscoring the state's commitment to the families of the institution's martyrs.
On an institutional level, the President stressed the need to strengthen support for the Carabineros, in a context marked by violence against police officers. “When they tell you to sleep peacefully, it’s because there is a carabinero watching over you. The commitment today is to take care of the institution,” he stated.
Kast also warned about the magnitude of losses within the uniformed police, noting that there are already more than 1,200 martyrs, and called for crime not to go unpunished. “It is up to us to ensure that Javier's death is not in vain, that it moves our hearts and moves Chile so that peace and order are a beacon for our nation,” he affirmed. In that vein, the President reinforced that the government will make every effort to clarify the case.
“We need justice. The state will do everything in its power, and we ask every neighbor and authority to help us find those responsible,” he indicated. The funeral of Sergeant Figueroa took place amid institutional honors and a high attendance of authorities and citizens, on a day marked by the national mourning declared after his death, following several days in critical condition due to a gun attack.
