A terrifying Friday unfolded at the Obispo Silva Lezaeta Institute after an 18-year-old student, identified as Hernán Meneses Leal, carried out an armed attack that left one dead and four injured. The assailant reportedly took advantage of the 10:30 AM break to execute a plan that, according to the Prosecutor's Office, involved the use of various knives hidden in his clothing. The fatal victim was María Victoria Reyes, 59, a beloved inspector with decades of service at the school.

According to prosecutor Juan Castro, the attacker "assaulted an inspector and subsequently a staff member who tried to assist the victim," causing Reyes' immediate death at the scene, while the other staff member had to be urgently transported in serious condition. Meneses' attack did not stop with the teaching staff, as he also injured three 15-year-old students (sophomores), who fortunately were taken to medical facilities. Amid the chaos, testimonies from parents emerged highlighting the bravery of the deceased inspector, who in her final moments "tried to protect some children, embraced some" to prevent them from being harmed by the weapon.

María Victoria Reyes was months away from celebrating 30 years of marriage and was known for her deep concern for student welfare. The community of Calama has organized a candlelight vigil inside the institute to pay tribute to a woman who dedicated her life to education.
