Findings Report The National Cultural Heritage Service of the National Monuments Council has provided details of the findings at the construction site of the Puerto Varas Hospital, which indicates that: Through archaeological excavations conducted in 2023, 650 ceramic fragments and 89 lithic items (tools or waste from stone knapping) were recorded, and the report establishes the existence of the now designated site “Hospital Puerto Varas-1 (HPV-1). ” By interpreting the identified materials, it is possible to determine that the site corresponds to a domestic use deposit with occupations from the Late Pottery Period (900 A. D.

– 1550 A. D. ) and the subsequent Historical Period of contact between local populations and the Spanish.

Dating conducted as part of these activities corroborates the proposed timeline, as two ceramic fragments yielded dates of 1510 A. D. and 1585 A.

D. The presence of these absolute dates allows for part of the occupation to be situated at a key moment in the Late Period, giving the site significant heritage value and relevant analytical potential for understanding the social, economic, and cultural dynamics of southern Chile in the moments immediately preceding Hispanic-Indigenous contact. Currently, the archaeological pieces are safeguarded at the Regional Museum of Ancud, and the project works are underway under an archaeological work plan that aims to protect any relevant elements identified during the operations.
