The Regional Prosecutor's Office of Los Ríos reported on Friday the discovery of human remains in a plot of land located about 50 meters from the house where Julia Chuñil Catricura lived, in the Huichaco sector of the Máfil commune. This information was revealed by regional prosecutor Tatiana Esquivel during a hearing to review precautionary measures taking place in the Guarantee Court of Los Lagos, in the case investigating the death of the 72-year-old woman. Three of her children are charged with the crimes of parricide, illegal burial, attempted robbery with violence and intimidation, significant mistreatment, and degrading treatment.
During the hearing, prosecutor Esquivel explained that one of the bone fragments found on the property corresponds to human remains. "The analyzed bone sample shows a 100 percent match with human DNA. This means that all the genetic material detected in that sample belongs to humans, with no significant mixture with other species," she stated.
According to the Public Ministry, other remains found at the site would preliminarily correspond to animals. The findings will be sent for specialized forensic analysis to determine the identity of the discovered human remains. The hearing continues in the Los Lagos court, where the potential modification of precautionary measures regarding one of the defendants in the case is also being discussed.
