The mayor of Santiago, Mario Desbordes, has resigned from his historic 26-year membership in Renovación Nacional. His departure is said to be due to the discomfort he has expressed within the political party, which he once presided over. This decision comes ahead of the party's internal elections, scheduled for Saturday, March 28.

A single list has been registered to lead the party during the new term, headed by senator and current secretary general, Andrea Balladares. In addition to confirming his exit from the party, the mayor of Santiago told La Tercera that he will not make any public statements regarding the matter.
