A joint operation between the Chilean Navy, the Investigative Police (PDI), and the National Customs Service led to the seizure of the French yacht "Tanana" in the Beagle Channel, near Puerto Williams, after it was detected conducting luxury trips without the necessary permits. According to reports, the vessel was offering paid maritime excursions within Chilean waters, prompting an investigation by the relevant authorities. The Port Captain of Puerto Williams, Lieutenant René Rojas, explained that the operation was carried out after confirming that the yacht was operating outside the current regulations.
"It was determined that the vessel was conducting paid trips in national maritime territory, which constitutes a violation of maritime legislation," he stated. Following the operation, the yacht was placed under the control of the authorities while investigations continue to determine the corresponding responsibilities. The case once again raises concerns for authorities regarding the oversight of foreign vessels conducting commercial activities without authorization in Chilean waters.
