The University of Talca, in coordination with the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), confirmed the presence of Avian Influenza H5N1 in birds at the Botanical Garden and declared its preventive closure. The University of Talca confirmed the detection of the H5N1 Avian Influenza virus in some bird species present in the Botanical Garden and Arboretum, following a joint effort with SAG. In light of this situation, the university decided to implement a preventive closure of the facility, a measure that will remain in effect until health authorities determine safe conditions for its reopening.

The institution assured that the safety of workers and visitors is safeguarded, thanks to the implementation of preventive protocols and ongoing supervision by SAG. These actions have intensified since late 2025, in response to the spread of avian influenza in various regions around the world. "The University of Talca has internal preventive protocols, the application of which allows us to react quickly and appropriately to the presence of the virus," the entity stated, emphasizing the role of migratory birds as potential carriers.

Additionally, authorities urged the community to avoid contact with wild birds, not to handle sick or dead specimens, and to maintain personal and food hygiene measures, following SAG's recommendations.
